We are still discovering our style…

If you’re over 35 and tell people you’re still discovering your style they’ll think you’re being silly and ridiculous. How can you not already know what you like by the time you’re 35? You’re supposed to know that by the time you’re 25!

But some people go through life never really having the time or means to pay a lot of attention to how they look. This is of course not a crisis. There are more important things in life and as long as you do have clothes on your back, a roof over your head and food to eat you’re good. After all, consider that there are millions of children around the world who don’t have clothes to wear and are dying because they don’t have food to eat.

So we’re not trying to make it out as if not having a dream wardrobe and the freedom to experiment with clothes for the purpose of discovering your style is some kind of crisis.

But for sure, having a limited wardrobe makes it much more difficult to establish a unique style identity. When all you can afford are the basics that are being sold in common stores, your style will be basic and common and similar to all the other people who can only afford to shop at the same stores as you.

That brings us to this question:

Do you need expensive clothes in order to have style?

We don’t think you need expensive clothes in order to have style; but having nice clothes definitely helps you to get more creative in your style experiments. And for the most part nice clothes tend to be expensive. That’s the way it is in life. The nicer things are, the more money you have to spend to obtain them. So while you don’t need expensive clothes in order to have style, you do need interesting clothes. And you need variety in your wardrobe.

Yes, you can have a wardrobe comprised entirely of budget-priced items and still have style if it’s an eclectic enough collection of things and you’re creative with putting them together. It’s not really about the name on the label and how much money your clothes cost.

But it is definitely more difficult to find interesting things when you’re limited to shopping at stores targeted to a less affluent demographic.
