The High End Life

– a My Fashion Wants short story

David and I had fought. It was something stupid–not even worth repeating. I slipped on my gray leather Free People ‘Lost Valley’ Booties, grabbed my Stripe Alpaca Blend Coat, my Topshop Fringe Suede Crossbody Bag and walked angrily out the door. It was early morning. I figured I’d just walk down to Starbucks and sit by myself for an hour or so having a coffee and a bagel. I didn’t have much on the agenda for the day. Wednesdays were usually uneventful. You could say Wednesday for me was like Saturday for most people. I worked Friday-Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday were my days off. Although Thursday wasn’t really much of a day off because I usually spent it preparing for Friday.

As I was walking in the direction of Starbucks my phone rang. I knew it would be David. I considered not answering but I knew he’d just keep ringing. So I went ahead and answered.

“Where are you?” he demanded after my gruffly spoken “What do you want?”

As if there were so many possible places I could be. I rolled my eyes wearily.

“Where do you think I am David, in France?”

“Don’t get smart,” he said, a hint of his German accent coming through. He was angry. But I was in no mood to care.

“How can I get smart?” I asked. “You just called me a dumb bitch fifteen minutes ago.”

“I never called you a dumb bitch.”

“Did you or did you not say to me, and I quote ‘girls who spend three thousand dollars on a bag are dumb bitches?”

“How is that calling you a dumb bitch?”

“Did I not just buy a three thousand dollar Chanel bag?”

In my mind I could see him shaking his head in exasperation. He wouldn’t see it as having called me a dumb bitch. In his mind all he was doing was trying to illustrate his point that I didn’t need a Chanel bag and that I shouldn’t have bought one just because other girls have one. Those other girls, in his opinion, were dumb bitches for spending that kind of money on a bag. But I was smarter than that. I knew better and because I knew better I should never have bought the bag.

“You know perfectly well what I meant by what I said Kate.”

And I did know; but I didn’t want to concede so easily. So I got all philosophical on him.

“If girls who spend three thousand dollars on a bag are dumb bitches and I just spent three thousand dollars on a bag does not that make me a dumb bitch by some one of those laws of logic you like to talk about all the time?”

“You’re being silly,” was his response. “And you need to turn around and come back to the apartment. There’s no need for us to be upset with each other over this.”

“Oh, so you’re upset with me?”

“Kate, just stop it okay? I’m not upset with you and I don’t think you have valid reason to be upset with me. You want to keep your bag, keep it. I just know that you’re not the kind of girl who takes pride in material things. And you’ve done nothing but talk about how unbelievable it is to you that this bag costs the kind of money that you spent on it. You’ve given no indication whatsoever of being happy to have the bag. All I hear every day is how you can’t see where the bag is worth three thousand dollars. And if you can’t justify the price tag in your own head, it seems to me like you shouldn’t keep the bag. But it’s your choice. I’m just trying to help you make a decision you can live with before it’s too late to return the bag.”

And I knew all along that’s all he was trying to do. It wasn’t that he was judging me. It was that he knew I was judging myself. And he knew I would continue to judge myself every day for as long as I kept the bag. Because he was right. I was not the kind of girl who took pride in material thing. And since buying the bag I hadn’t once felt “special” because I was now the owner of a Chanel bag. Far from that I felt stupid for succumbing to those arbitrary feelings of Instagram envy that had made me start to want a Chanel bag and other high end designer stuff in the first place.

David was right. I wasn’t going to be able to live comfortably with myself knowing deep down there was nothing about the bag that made it warrant a three thousand dollar price tag. But even so, there was something about a Chanel bag and what it represented. And that something was powerful enough that it made a dilemma of what should have been an easy choice for me. I wanted the bag because I had managed to allow myself to be brainwashed after months of following privileged rich girls Instagram into believing that Chanel and other high end brands symbolized high worth, success and a happy life. And even though I knew better deep down, and now that I had the bag I could see plainly that it was all highly ridiculous, I still wanted to belong to that high end club. I wanted that high end life.

To be continued…
