Looking around at pictures on the internet of women in red dresses famous and not famous you’ll see that many chose to go with black shoes. Black is always a safe color; but there are plenty of other colors you’ll find as well including colors that you might not expect someone to wear with a red dress such as blue yellow and green.

These metallic bronze/gold colors go nicely with the red dresses. Metallic shoes have at one point seemed to become almost as safe a choice as black, with gold and silver metallic hues being paired with a wide variety of colors.

Would you ever wear yellow shoes with a red dress? If not why not?

Answer: No, I would never wear yellow shoes with a red dress. But I’ve seen it done. Tyra Banks wore yellow pumps with a red dress some time back in 2010. And although she made a few people’s list of Fashion Don’ts, I thought she looked perfectly fine. But then again it could have been that she was so pretty. You know how when someone is ridiculously pretty just about anything they wear looks great? Like Adriana Lima could wear a potato sack and look seriously hot? That could have been what made Tyra’s yellow pumps red shoes combination look perfectly stylish. But I think the combination isn’t as atrocious in reality as it seems on paper. I’ve seen a few other ladies wearing yellow shoes with a red dress and they looked fine too. I, however, would not personally have the courage to go out wearing yellow shoes with a red dress. At least I don’t think so. But who knows? Sometimes I surprise myself.

Would you ever wear green shoes with a red dress?

Answer: For the same reason that I wouldn’t wear yellow shoes with a red dress I wouldn’t wear green shoes with a red dress. I just wouldn’t have the courage to be so bold. But note the words I have used. Courage is a good thing. It is a good thing to be bold. The opposite of both of these words means one is too afraid to take chances and there is nothing great about that. So while I would not personally wear green shoes with a red dress it isn’t because I think there’s something wrong with the combination. It’s fashion. I don’t believe there can be a right and wrong when it comes to what people choose to wear. Fashion is about choice. You have a choice. And when you have a choice you should have the courage and be bold enough to wear whatever the heck you want. Because you’re free to do that and freedom is an precious thing. Take full advantage of the freedoms that you have!  Other people and fear of their opinion should not dictate what you wear. I know that, and I believe that firmly. And now that I’ve reminded myself of it I think I’ll change my answer. If the mood strikes me one day to go out wearing green shoes with a red dress then yes, I would do it. Who cares if someone thinks you look like you should have christmas lights wrapped around you turned on and flickering? In fact I think I’m going to plan on making a point of going out wearing green shoes with a red dress one of these days to prove to myself that I don’t dress for other people’s approval.

Usually when I think of animal print I conjure up images of your traditional leopard cheetah and tiger prints. This is a Northern Chinese leopard at least according to the info that accompanies the picture on the Wikipedia page where I found it.

Thanks to Marie-Lan Nguyen for putting this picture in the public domain. How cute is that leopard? Of course I would not have the courage to get within a mile of it but it is so pretty. Can you imagine ripping its skin off to make bags and shoes? But I am sure they don’t do that any more right? These days they don’t use real animal skin to make items of apparel (I hope), but I do think they did once upon a time. Maybe they never did or maybe they still do. I’m really not sure either way and just not interested in doing the research right now.

What color shoes to wear with animal print dresses is going to really depend on the dress. There are so many different kinds of animal prints. I said above that I tend to conjure up images of your traditional leopard cheetah and tiger prints but what constitutes “traditional”? After all here’s another leopard (a Persian Leopard) with skin that is quite different from that of the North China Leopard above.

This Persian leopard looks a bit more on serious side–kind of majestic and not quite so cute that makes you want to cuddle up to it; but looks can be deceiving. This leopard could be gentle as a lamb while the cat above could be the one that mauls you to death without provocation. But I digress…

My real point is that animal prints vary so what color shoes you could wear with a particular animal print dress is going to depend on the dress.

As always I stress to each his own. You might select a color shoes to wear with your animal print dress that someone else thinks is all wrong for the dress; but you should always have the confidence to wear what you want to wear if you personally think it looks good. You’re dressing for yourself. You should be anyway. It should be about how you feel and what you think and the opinions of others can be considered if you like but you certainly shouldn’t treat the opinions of others as if they are “the word”.

Generally you can’t go wrong with black; so to be on the safe side wear a sexy pair of black pumps or other black shoes if your dress isn’t the kind with which you would wear pumps; but if you want to avoid black and brown colors here are some outfits with animal print dresses and bold color shoes to give you a rough idea of how the different colors might look.

If the dress is more orange red then you can find a pair of dark orange red shoes; or if you’re feeling particularly daring you can try a neon shade for maximum visibility; but for that you probably need to have an impenetrable confidence so that anyone who might feel inclined to give you one of those “What in the world is she wearing?” looks might not cause you to feel self conscious. The animal print by itself will make you more noticeable so wearing neon shoes in addition could be considered ill advised. However you just never know what’s going to look good. Things most of us would never think of putting together other people put together and create outfits that make us stop and take notice. If people don’t take chances in fashion then there’s only sameness which might be safe but can be boring.

Someone asked the question “does red go with yellow?” on Yahoo Answers and the question generated some interesting answers. The answer that was tagged as the best answer was “no” that would look like ketchup and mustard”; but frankly I side with the people who answered that it really depends on the outfit as in the pieces that are put together and the shades of red and yellow that are mixed. One person also suggested that it depends on your skin tone but that would go to the shade of red and yellow that you mix. For example there were a few people who suggested that red and yellow go together if they are darker shades of red and darker shades of yellow but if you factor in skin tone the suggestion might not prove true for everyone. Some people might look better with brighter shades because of their complexion.

If you mix red with yellow you get orange. The orange will vary in color depending on how much red is mixed with how much yellow But of course you knew that. You learned it in grade school.

So does red go with yellow or not?
Whether or not red goes with yellow is one of those things that just comes down to opinion. In fashion really anything you can make work for you is acceptable. As long as you love your outfit it doesn’t matter if someone else thinks it’s something they would never wear. Fashion is about you the individual and how you feel. Fortunately there are great resources available for the fashion challenged to take inspiration from those who have a gift for knowing just the right things to mix and match to create the perfect outfit with an animal print item.

I’m sure I’ve heard somewhere that mixing prints is a fashion faux pas; but some people have a knack for being able to put fabulous outfits together using pieces that the fashion mags usually recommend against mixing and matching.  I guess the key to mising prints is to mixing the right prints in the right colors.

Put this outfit together on Polyvore a while back. It was just a random creation. Didn’t have any special reason for picking any of the particular pieces and putting them together.

Would I personally wear this outfit? I’m not sure I could pull off the combination of red bright corals and bright pinks. This outfit looks like the kind of thing you’ll want to wear to your spring Sunday garden tea parties. I don’t find myself getting invited to many Sunday garden tea parties so on the very rare occasion when I shop for clothes (don’t ask me the last time I bought myself a single thing), I don’t usually pick up items I can wear to Sunday garden tea parties.

Even if I thought I could wear this outfit and had a garden tea party to attend where it would make the perfect outfit I certainly could not afford any single piece of clothing or jewelry from the set. The most affordable item here not counting the jewelry is the HUGO Light Pastel Pink Stretch Cotton Emna Blouse:

Hugo Light Pastel Pink Stretch Cotton Emna BlouseIt comes with a $160 price tag. Probably cheap for most of you ladies but way more than I could afford to spend on a whole outfit much less on just 1 piece of clothing.

Of course the individual pieces can be mixed with other items to create completely different looks. For example here is a set by Polyvore member (Website: http://fashion-this.tumblr.com), with the Light Pastel Pink Stretch Cotton Emna Blouse. In her set she mixes the blouse with a grey marble blazer Black wool-blend tailored trousers gray leather Brogues a charcoal grey fedora and black leather shoulder bag to create the perfect outfit for a preppy college girl

As the title says this is an outfit featuring the black and white stripe Cookie party dress from Alice + Olivia with a pair of red Louboutin Noeud 120 bow-embellished leather peep-toe pumps and a red leather Reed Krakoff hobo bag.

The dress is sleeveless with black and white horizontal ribbon stripes. It has a pleated flared skirt and a cut out back with a black mesh back inset and exposed back zip fastening. It is a fully lined dress made of 100% cotton.

The shoes are crimson leather peep toe pumps with covered heel measuring approximately 4.5 inches. They have a 0.5 inch concealed platform bow embellishment in the back detachable buckle-fastening ankle strap and have the signature Louboutin red leather sole.

The bag is a red nappa pebble leather hobo style bag from Reed Krakoff. It has black nickle hardware top zip with turnlock a detachable shoulder strap. It also features an inside back zip pocket and front split pocket and twill lining.

With this outfit the dress is shown with a blue Hermes handbag which is admittedly way out of range of affordability for those of us who do not have million dollar bank accounts. This bag is was selling for $18″,600 on madisonavenuecouture.com. According to the description it is a “Hermes 100% guaranteed authentic Handbag”. It’s the “Blue Hydra Birkin Handbag”. This particular bag appears to have been pre-owned though it apparently was “Never Carried”; but from the looks of it it might have been sold already so the “Never Carried” status may have changed since the bag was initially put up for sale.

The shoes shown with the dress are a pair of Christian Louboutin Daffodil 160 blue suede platform pumps. The bracelet is a Daniela Farah bracelet and the earrings are Marc by Marc Jacobs gold studs earrings

Are there some occasions outside of Christmas and the holidays when it’s okay to wear green shoes with a red dress?

Did some google image research but couldn’t find any photographic evidence of green shoes red dress trends. Did find a pic of Katie Holmes on the red carpet wearing electric blue shoes with a red gown but it looks like green isn’t a commonly selected color for shoes to wear with a red dress.

But if you can wear yellow shoes with a red dress as did Tyra Banks back in 2010 at the Kids Choice Awards (view photo on external website), and Katie Holmes back in 2008 at a “Night to Benefit Raising Malawai and UNICEF” event in New York City (view photo on external website),” and you can wear blue shoes with a red dress (Carey Mulligan” Katie Holmes),” then surely you can wear green shoes with a red dress.

The key would be to match the right shade of green with the right shade of red.
